A River's Mournful Secret: The Haunting of La Llorona

Welcome back, aficionados of the uncanny and the occult! For our final chilling tale before Halloween, we delve into the legend of a truly infamous spectral figure: La Llorona, the Weeping Woman. Her nightly screams are said to chill you to the bone and push the boundaries of your sanity.
Like many enduring folklore figures, countless variations of her tale exist. However, the core narrative remains consistent: her dreadful actions drove her to madness, condemning her to an eternal, restless roam across our earthly plane.
Who Was La Llorona?
Among the many "Marias" common in Spanish-speaking cultures—a name still prominent among women today—was La Llorona. This legend boasts a rich history, with some versions even tracing back to pre-Hispanic times, long before the Spanish conquest. Yet, for this post, I’ll recount the version I heard whispered in my childhood.
Like many unfortunate souls trapped in the spiritual realm, this ghostly presence crosses into our dimension to haunt our dreams and, sometimes, our waking lives. Maria, fell deeply in love with a man who was ultimately wrong for her. With him, she had children. Tragically, he abandoned her for another woman from his own social class. In a fit of overwhelming despair, Maria drowned her children in a nearby river. When she emerged from her horrific trance and realized the atrocity she had committed, she took her own life.
All across the country, particularly near bodies of water and rivers, a haunting, mournful cry echoes: "¡AY MIS HIJOS!" (Oh, my children!)
Encounters
Reports abound of encounters with a spectral lady, often described as robed in flowing white, like a ghostly bride. However, as she draws near, her face is said to transform, revealing a decrepit, corpse-like visage. By the time one recognizes her as La Llorona, it is tragically too late. She has come to claim your futile soul for the afterlife.
My friends used to warn me with solemn faces, "If you hear her nearby, it means she is actually far away, giving you precious moments to flee. But if her cry sounds distant, she is perilously close, leaving you no hope of escaping her ominous terror!" They also shared other bloodcurdling remarks, like, "She enjoys knocking or scratching at windows while you're sleeping." To this day, when I hear windows screeching or doors creaking late at night, I still get the heebie-jeebies. Even as an adult, that chilling thought lingers in the back of my mind.
To my dear friends, especially those from cultures less familiar with our uncanny legends and myths: now that you've heard these tales, you can judge their truth for yourselves. Perhaps you'll remain skeptical, dismissing them as mere superstition. But maybe, just maybe, one day you'll turn at that sudden creak and behold one of the phantoms described in this October chill holiday special, and you’ll find your mind irrevocably changed.
