Part One: The Turning Tide II

As we approached “La Punta,” a delightful sight unfolded: numerous surfers sat or paddled, patiently waiting for the perfect wave. Watching them filled me with joy, as learning to surf has always been a fervent desire. In my deepest fantasies, I constantly dream of the ocean. I'm either swimming or surfing, immersed in the water and feeling the impact of the crystal-clear waves breaking over me.

The waves crashing on the sandbar created a massive explosion of sound. You could sense the immense power of Mother Nature in the impact, and the vulnerability of being human; caught in the curl, your skull or body could be smashed against the seabed, leading to severe injury or death. The foam of the breaking waves washed over our feet, a truly pleasant sensation. It's a special characteristic of the Mexican coast. The warm ocean in southern Mexico makes for a particularly inviting beach experience; not many countries can boast of both beautiful beaches and waters warm enough to entice you to dive in.

The walk from Zicatela to La Punta takes about 20 minutes, depending on your pace. With our long strides, it took us roughly that long, allowing us to admire the beautiful scenery along the way. Upon arrival, we saw people playing volleyball on a beach court while others relaxed on the sand, simply absorbing the magical beauty this haven offers.

From the beach, we walked up to La Punta’s main road. I was amazed by the number of small bars, restaurants, and cafés, many of which were run by foreigners. La Punta is also a popular hostel area, with many places providing budget-friendly accommodation, especially for surfers.

It was an utterly unique sight. It felt like being transported to a movie-like California beach, complete with a "Baywatch" aesthetic and plenty of attractive surfer bodies, yet simultaneously existing in a world of austerity and hippie-like simplicity. The scent of marijuana hung in the air, a clear indication that people were seeking to shed their worries, unwind, and fully embrace the present moment—a luxury often stolen by our busy lives.

As sunset approached, the beach began to fill with people. The sunsets here are truly unforgettable and among the most spectacular I have ever witnessed. We stopped at a popular local convenience store, picked up a caguama (large beer) and some snacks, and headed to watch the twilight show.

It's a daily ritual: every afternoon, people walk toward La Punta to sit and watch the sunset as if it were a grand movie. All the natural elements play before us—the sun slowly sinking, seagulls circling, people chatting, holding hands, embracing, and laughing. However, as the sun begins to set, a silence falls over the crowd. Only the sound of the waves remains, accompanying the beautiful, striking scene.

We found a place to sit, opened our caguama, and as we took sips, we were both overwhelmed by the allure we were beholding. It's astonishing to think this has been appreciated for millennia in the exact same way. No matter how advanced and civilized we become, we are always struck with awe by Mother Nature—whether it presents itself in a harsh way, like a hurricane, or inspires marvel, like staring at a sunset.

Once the dusk spectacle was over, everyone headed back to the main street, eager to check out the local bars and cafés. We chose a charming spot called "Café Olé" for dinner. Although they are famous for their excellent brunches, sandwiches, and coffee, we decided to continue the evening with a beer, as we had already started with one. This place is definitely a must-visit if you are ever in Puerto at the point; it offers a fantastic atmosphere, and It leaves absolutely nothing to be desired.

After chatting for hours, we returned to our accommodation in Zicatela. We walked along the beach in the darkness, listening to the waves, watching the stars, and enjoying the sweet breeze. Looking back, I realize that walking on the beach at night is something I would now avoid due to potential danger. Thankfully, nothing happened then, and since we were unaware of the risk, we were able to fully enjoy that unforgettable experience.
